Borgo Del Tiglio
Borgo del Tiglio, guided by Nicola Manferrari, has become a benchmark for white wine in Friuli, celebrated for the remarkable textural complexity he brings to varietals like Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia, and Chardonnay. Originally trained as a pharmacist, Nicola let curiosity and a deep respect for the land guide his path, managing yields with precise pruning, maintaining full grass coverage, and avoiding fertilizers. In the cellar, his hands-off approach and use of gravity allow the vineyard’s unique soils, microclimates, and vine age to express themselves fully, producing wines that reflect both Friuli’s character and Nicola’s scientific precision and patient craftsmanship.
Our Relationship
I was driving through the neighboring town in early 2009 looking for Borgo del Tiglio (still before I had an international cell phone and GPS). I used to get places the old fashioned way… asking old men on the streets of Italy where to find a producer. In this case I asked a man in his mid-70's where to find the winery. I assumed that because Borgo del Tiglio is one of the most historic from the area he'd have known... instead he replied "Cormons, I've never been there... it must be one kilometer from here"... as if half a mile would be too far to go in 75 years!
