Picchioni

Founded in 1988 in Canneto Pavese, a small town with one of the highest historical ratios of vineyard to total land in Italy, Andrea Picchioni set out to recover abandoned hillside vineyards in the Solinga Valley. The property sits within the Oltrepò Pavese region, a triangle of Lombardy wedged between Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, and Piedmont at the northern end of the Apennine mountains. The seven hectares grow on steep, south-facing slopes of sandy and pebbly soil, where the intensity of the summer sun drives the vines to full ripeness. Certified organic since 2014, the winery takes a thorough approach to sustainability: sourcing water exclusively from on-property wells, returning grape marc and pruning scraps to the soil, and maintaining a no-tillage philosophy to protect against erosion. With Buttafuoco at the center of the range, the wines are rich in body, color, and tannin.
