Piancornello’s Montalcino

This humble family affair in Montalcino is one of the area’s rising stars, consistently garnering scores in the high nineties and wowing Brunello lovers across the country.

These are wines to savor and cherish for years to come.

A word from Claudio Monaci, fourth-generation winemaker at Piancornello

“In 1950, my great grandfather Zefiro fell in love with Montalcino and acquired the property of Piancornello, which consisted of a rural house dating back to the 1700s and the land surrounding it, and started to plant the first Brunello vineyards. In the years that followed, great part of the family left the estate, but my great grandparents and my parents, Alfeo and Silvana, continued to cultivate it: living on their own land was, for them, an important value.

Today, that tradition continues to live through my wife, my daughters, and myself. Piancornello is located in the zone of Sesta, between Sant’ Angelo in Colle and Castenuovo dell’Abate, nestled on a plateau facing Val d’Orcia and Mount Amiata on the horizon; it covers a surface of around 20 hectares in an area characterized by a Mediterranean microclimate and steep hills rich in rocks and stones.

Such favorable conditions allow organic agriculture and the production of a genuine, elegant and generous Brunello di Montalcino that is inextricably bound to the territory where it is produced.”Map of Italy showing location of Piancornello winery in Tuscany.

The Winery

An 18th-century farmhouse anchors this organically-cultivated estate in the pristine nature of Montalcino, rubbing shoulders with centuries-old olive groves and Brunello vineyards. On their 10 hectares of vineyards, Piancornello cultivates predominantly Sangiovese vines with some Ciliegiolo. Their Sangiovese clones were chosen carefully to achieve low yields and looser bunches.

Piancornello takes its name from the hamlet just South of Montalcino where the winery is located. Its warmer and drier climate, as compared to the neighboring Chianti region, and proximity to the Mediterranean sea (45 km away) make this a prized site for winemaking. The Orcia Valley carries the sea breeze all the way to the vineyard, creating a microclimate that allows for an early harvest before the autumn rain. Piancornello’s vineyards grow on moderately sloped hills in rocky, volcanic soils with southern exposures, creating full-bodied, mineral wines. For information on all of Volio’s wines and producers, head to our main website.
